Being careless with data could result in convictions

The UK's Information Commissioner has called for new laws that would prosecute data owners who expose data subjects to risk, according to a post on Slashdot. There have been a number of high profile cases recently where organisations (both Government and private sector) have lost laptops which contain private date. The suggested new law would prosecute organisations that had not adequately encrypted the data.
