For anybody of my generation the term Berkeley conjures up images of student radicals and all that was the liberal 1960s. However, an article in this week’s Economist highlights the dangers of stereotypes.
It seems that the University of California, Berkeley, want to fell an oak grove to build some new facilities. This has caused a protest amongst protesters, who have camped out amongst the branches o f the trees for 16 months.
But, none of the protesters are students. Indeed, when the local police chief wrote an open letter outlining his plans for dispersing the protesters, 400 students wrote letters to him, with 90% of the students calling on him to act faster.
I fear that we boomers are destined to be trapped between an older tier of conservatives and younger tier of the self-centred!
