The BBC have an article talking about how Facebook and Bebo are catching up on MySpace in terms of popularity in the UK. Although MySpace continues to grow its member base, Facebook and Bebo are growing much faster. For example, Facebook grew by 500% in the past six months. If Bebo and Facebook continue to grow at their current rates, their membership base will catch MySpace by about September this year.
Nielsen/Net Ratings says 10% of UK Internet Users visited Facebook, compared with 9% of US Internet users (but, there are many more US Internet users). At the moment, in the UK, MySpace has 6.5 million users, Bebo has 4 million, and Facebook 3.2 million.
The report also quoted that Bebo and Facebook were more sticky, the average monthly usages stats were Bebo 152 minutes, Facebook 143 minutes, and MySpace 96 minutes.
MySpace has had a pretty good run as the number on Social Networking site in several countries for a few years, in such a trend and fashion arena it is not surprising that it should be losing its shine. The challenge now for MySpace is to try and discover (or create) the next big thing, or MySpace and even Social Networking might go the way of the hula hoop, the hotpants, and punk.
