The Guardian has an interesting article on how Dutch consumer electronics giant has shifted its focus from pure technology towards design and lifestyle. Philips have been involved in two of the major innovations in the past, first the cassette tape in 1963 and the CD in 1982 (with Sony).
In recent years Philips have pulled out of PCs and more recently divested its chip making business. As in indication of the lifestyle focus the interview with Philips head Rudy Provoost, highlighted the partnership with jewellery firm Swarovski. Amongst the products on offer are USB sticks which look like pendants and smart earphones which can be worn with a ball gown.
When I look at these products, and read the direction that Provoost is taking Philips in, I am reminded of the contributions that Philips Design Director Marco Bevolo has been making at ESOMAR events over the last couple of years. If you get the chance to hear Marco speak I would strongly recommend it.
